“Galicianer Shtetl” – Jews of Galicia Remembrance Days – Tarnow, Poland, June 11-14

“The Galicianer Shtetl” – Jews of Galicia Remembrance Days program is an annual series of events scheduled this year from June 11th to 14th, in the town of Tarnów. The Remembrance Days are organized by the Regional Museum in Tarnów (Muzeum Okręgowe w Tarnowie) and the Committee for Protection of Jewish Heritage in Tarnow (Komitet Opieki nad Zabytkami Kultury Żydowskiej w Tarnowie). Preliminary Schedule

June 11 (Thursday):

12:00 Prayer in Zbylitowska Góra, at the mass grave of Tarnów Jews, with the participation of a Rabbi and a Catholic priest. Zbylitowska Góra is in a forest near Tarnów and is the largest mass gravesite of Jews, including 800 children, from WWII in Poland.

13:00 Meeting with mayor of Zbylitowska Góra and local officials. Discussion on development of tourism related to Jewish historical site.

18:00 Screening of Simon Target’s award winning documentary film, A Town Called Brzostek, about the renovation of the Jewish cemetery in Brzostek near Tarnow. The screening will take place in the Tarnów Theatre with participation of the producer.

21.00 Jewish music concert at the Bima (the remnant of the old synagogue pictured above).

June 12 (Friday):

10:00 Screening of Leïla Férault-Levy’s documentary, “The Shadows: A Family Tale” (“Les Ombres, un conte familial”). The story of the legacy left by the Holocaust on a Jewish family from Radomyśl Wielki – north of Tarnów. The screening will take place in the Tarnów Theatre with the participation of the director.

Evening Shabbat Program organized for friends & interested parties by David Singer, a Bobover Hasidic Jew from New York. The President of Tarnów, Roman Ciepiela, will participate. Please note that a minyan of 10 men is needed for Shabbat services and we would appreciate if you can let us know if you will be in attendance.

June 13 (Saturday):

Shabbat Morning Prayer – Shacharit at the Bima [including the reading of the Torah].

15:00 – 18:00 Jewish Street project. The work of young volunteers will be exhibited.

21:00 Concert under the Bimah.

June 14 (Sunday):

11:00 – 13:00 Jewish Cemetery guided tours. Tarnów has one of the largest intact Jewish cemeteries in Poland.

    You’ve already helped me in finding proof of the very existence of my great-grandfather rabbi Abbale’h Schnur, who was for me, so far, a mere family legend.
